Please answer each of the questions. Each response is to be typed and double-spaced. 25 points maximum per responses. Each response is to be typed and double-spaced (around half a page). Due in class no later than 1:00 on Wednesday October 19.
Assess each of the following four scenarios from an ethical standpoint covered in class (subjectivism, relativism, absolutism, utilitarianism, rational duty/Kantian ethics, egoism, social contract theory or virtue-based ethical approaches). You are to select and describe two theories to apply as a means of assessing the morally appropriate course of action to take for each scenario. You will be expected to explain how and why each of the approaches offered by the two chosen theories compare and/or contrast with one another in attempting to morally justify choosing between one side of a moral dilemma involving the lives and welfare of others.
You need not offer your own personal reasoned opinions on the issues nor decide which approach is correct/incorrect if you do not want. You are being evaluated on your ability to convey your grasp of the moral theories you discuss by both summarizing and applying them to pre-selected hypothetical situations containing ethical dilemmas.
You must answer each of the following four (A-D) responses in order to be eligible to receive full credit for this exam. Assume each scenario as unrelated to the other scenarios. You are not to use the same moral theory twice on this exam assignment.
A. Your best friend has just posted a selfie from her recent trip to Europe to her instagram account. In the photo she is standing in front of a Holocaust memorial site in Poland and she is smiling and making a ?peace sign gesture? with her hands. Since the posting, many people have responded as to how insensitive she is in taking such a photo and not appreciating the solemnity of the situation not to mention the profound loss of life that occurred on that site. Your parents happen to be Jewish although you do not recognize the tradition for your own life. As a conscientious moral agent, how should you act in this situation? Should you counsel your friend? Side with the critics? Disclose what your friend did to your parents? Ignore the issue? Something else?
B. You are the CEO of a theme park. The park?s newest attraction is a Halloween-themed ride called 5150. The ride is a simulated tour through a mental hospital where crazed psychopaths and deviants roam. A parents? rights protest group is demanding the ride be closed down on account of it paints a bad picture of those who suffer from mental illness. 5150 has cost a substantive amount of money to build and staff. The Board of Directors of whom you answer to demand to see a profit from this eagerly anticipated attraction once it opens. But, you are a morally conscientious agent. What do you do in this situation? Do you consult with the Board of Directors to revise the ride so as to satisfy the protestors? demand for political correctness? Do you just ignore the protestors and open the ride and watch the long lines of people bring in the money?? Something else??
C. You have been assigned a service learning project for your ethics class. Your professor informs you that for this assignment you can either give $100 to a charitable organization of your choice or volunteer 10 hours in your community helping to improve it in some aspect. This is a mutually exclusive choice- you can only pick one option and you cannot offer a ?creative alternative? as a means for resolving the dilemmas such as paying half and volunteering 5 hours.
D. You happen to witness a friend of yours give alcohol to a 10 year old minor while at a party. No one at the party seems to notice or care. The minor happens to be the son/daughter of the person who is giving the alcohol to the minor. What, if anything should you do?
