Panel Discussion

Panel Discussion
The discussion of each section of our book All Souls, will be a whole class discussion forum. The students on the panel will have prepared a 2-3 page paper based on their section of the book. However, please be mindful of the fact that the whole class will be reading the whole book.  When you are not on the panel you will write a 1-2 page analysis of the same portion of the book. The analysis will pose a question, make a statement or comment on the concepts presented in the book. • The students on the panel will be presenting in a small group, however, you will be working individually and submit your own original work. • Panel discussions may last more than one class period as the complexity of the issues and concepts will require multiple class sessions to address them adequately. • Panel papers and discussion questions will be typed and handed in on the day of the panel discussion.
Panel members You will be responsible for  analyzing, highlighting and addressing sociological concepts, social problems, issues and controversies. You must be prepared to respond to the questions/statements/comments prepared and presented by the audience members.  *You will identify a specific theme that is apparent in your assigned section of the book.
*You will need to relate your theme to a historical event, current event, issue, problem in society etc.  If your theme is relevant to a past or present personal experience,  make a personal connection to your theme and include it in your paper. You could also select a theme that you are not familiar with.
*For each theme that you select, you will need to locate one source to support your theme – an article, website, news story ,  pertaining to the current event/issue/societal problem.
*Discuss your theme and your connections, using quotes and/or excerpts from the book and your articles to tie it all in. Stay focused on your theme. You will find that some concepts can extend into other concepts and spark discussion on a related topic. You can address this in your paper but keep the focus of your paper to one theme.
Panel member papers will be 2 to 3 pages in length, double spaced, proofread and printed up and  submitted on the day of the panel.
Audience members (Discussion facilitators)
Pull from the reading one solid , open-ended question or a  thought provoking statement. Your question should be complex and not just a  who/ what/ where question pertaining to the characters or setting.  It should be something that made you think as you read the material.
Your comments/questions should provoke discussion and allow for answers and responses that refer to the selected reading section. In your paper, you will fully answer/address your question/comment/statement.
The first paragraph of your paper should “set up’ the question and may include a quotation or excerpt from the reading. You will ask/present your questions to the panel.  Your questions are not meant to stump the panel but to provoke discussion and to allow the entire class to fully analyze the section of reading. Audience member papers will be 1-2 pages in length, double spaced, proofread and printed up and  submitted on the day of the panel.
Please be aware that due to the time constraints of the reading and panel, ALL work is due on the day of the panels.
Group One will review the first portion of the book up to page 67
Group Two will review the second portion of the book up to page 134
Group Three will review the third portion of the book up to page 198
Group Four will review the last portion of the book which ends on page 263
