Assignment 1: Literary Analysis Essay
Teacher: Mr. Knapp
Suggested Length: 4-6 double-spaced pages (1000-1200 words approx.)
A literary analysis essay is designed to get you ‘thinking about your thinking’ and critically understanding concepts and ideas in both the text studied (Oryx and Crake) and the world around us, rather than simply regurgitate information. A literary analysis is not about personal opinion or description (‘I think this…’ or ‘I feel this…’), but rather formally analyzing information, developing an argument (thesis) and supporting your ideas with outside references.
Question: How does Oryx and Crake correlate to and discuss issues plaguing our own society?
You will need to develop your own thesis for your essay that can be supported by examples of literary devices used in the novel as well as outside sources.
Submitting your thesis and essay plan will be worth ten marks.
Works cited: This assignment requires you to reference academic/professional sources (i.e. books, journal articles, websites ending in .edu) to support your thesis statement. Please include your list of works cited on a separate page with your essay, in MLA format.Do not cite ‘123helpme.com’, ‘Brainyquote.com’ or ‘sparknotes.com’ – we are better than this!
Furthermore, you are required to produce a 30-word annotation for each source; this annotation must detail what your source is about and how it is used within your essay to benefit/support your argument.
Submitting your annotated bibliography will be worth five marks.
