You must include a bibliography with full citations for the textbook, monograph, and any outside sources. The required heading is only your name and a page number in the top right hand corner of each page.
The review must be written in formal academic style (i.e. do not use slang or contractions)
The Assignment:
The book review is a written narrative critique of the monograph you have been assigned to read. The purpose of the narrative is for you to engage with the material and critically analyze both the positive and negative aspects of the book. This is NOT an opportunity for description – less than 1/4 of your paper should be dedicated to telling me what the book was about. That means no more than roughly 1 page! Rather than a description, you need to ask serious questions about the material you are studying. I have listed several examples of analytical questions below, and you may use them as guidelines or choose your own approach. There will be times at which this paper calls for your analysis and as such should reveal YOUR thoughts about the book so do not be afraid to voice your opinion! Having said that, make sure your tone still remains formal with no slang, contractions, etc. and remains predominately in third person.
Be sure to provide a parenthetical citation for all references to the textbook, monograph, and/or outside sources within the text and provide a full citation for each source on a Works Cited or Bibliography page. DO NOT PLAGIARISE or you will receive an immediate zero on the assignment!
Questions to consider when reviewing books:
– Who is the author and what is his/her goal in writing this book?
– What sources or evidence does the author use to write the book?
– What is the main argument or point of the book?
– Does the author’s point substantiate or refute what you have learned on the topic?
– If the author is trying to convince you of something (which they usually are), is he/she successful? – Is the author biased or objective? How so?
– What part(s) of the book was particularly interesting to you and why?
– What did you like least about the book and why?
– What did you learn from this book?
– Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not?
** Important: Do not simply answer these questions in order – this is an essay, which means it should have an introduction paragraph, a body with at least three well-developed paragraphs (each of which should have its own focused point), and a conclusion. Think about what you are going to write before you write it, organize your thoughts, and then write your essay!
